Sauté-san 素特-さん's Ramen and Curry Rice

One of the few places in Singapore you can get your vegan Japanese fix is at Sauté-san at City Square Mall. The food certainly doesn't disappoint.

Shown above is their spicy miso ramen with mushrooms, konbu, tofu and aburaage (tau pok). The broth is rich and satisfying.

This is their tempura Japanese curry. It comes with a good range of veggies: enoki, eggplant, mushroom, long beans and pumpkin. Unfortunately, their curry is nowhere like the sweet Japanese curry that we know from Japanese curry houses (like Coco Ichibanya). However, the curry still tastes good; it just doesn't taste like Japanese curry. Did I say the food doesn't disappoint? Correction, it is a little bit of a disappointment.

Prices are on the high side, with the tempura Japanese curry going for SGD18.90 before 7% GST. I didn't manage to note down the price of the spicy miso ramen but I might update this post should I visit the restaurant again.

Pro tip: Visit their branch at the second floor of Bugis Cube (simply called "Sauté"). It is their first branch. It is smaller. It is hotter. But it is also cheaper. *laughs* This particular branch's menu is not focused on Japanese cuisine, but you can still get bamboo salt kelp ramen and a host of other good food like fried rice, mee hoon kway, pasta and burgers. They have a third branch at Funan too, but the prices are on par with the City Square Mall branch.

Random note: If 素特 were to be pronounced in Japanese, it would be read "sotoku" or "sutoku". So 素特-さん would be "Sotoku-san" or "Sutoku-san". "素" doesn't translate to "vegetarian" in Japanese. It just means "elementary, principle, naked, uncovered" according to my dictionary. You see this kanji in words like "素材". So don't get too happy if you see "素" when you're in Japan unless you're outside a Chinese restaurant or something, hahaha.
